West Bank attack overshadows new Middle East talks

Posted in Category: Middle East News — dina @ 3:20 pm

Palestinian security forces have mounted a huge operation in the West Bank to catch the killers of four Israeli settlers shot on Tuesday.
Dozens of members of Hamas, which said it carried out the attack, have been arrested.

The killings came ahead of the first direct talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in two years.

Officials are gathering in Washington for discussions, before the Israeli and Palestinian leaders meet on Thursday.

US, Palestinian and Israeli officials have said they will not allow the attack, near Hebron, to undermine the talks.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killings as a “blatant attempt” to undermine the upcoming negotiations.

Tony Blair says did not foresee Iraq “nightmare”

Posted in Category: Middle East News — dina @ 3:18 pm

Former British prime minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday he could have not have imagined what he called the “nightmare” that unfolded in Iraq but still did not regret joining the U.S.-led invasion.

In a political memoir Blair echoed previous statements that the 2003 invasion was justified because Saddam Hussein posed a threat and could have developed weapons of mass destruction.

The self-penned volume “A Journey” was published on the day the United States formally ended combat operations in Iraq after a conflict that claimed more than 100,000 deaths, most of them civilians.

Blair, 57, said he felt “desperately sorry” for the lives cut short, but said the mistaken belief that Saddam was hiding weapons of mass destruction was an “understandable error.”

Israel’s defense minister said on Wednesday the Jewish state would be willing to hand over parts of Jerusalem in peace talks with the Palestinians to be launched by President Barack Obama.

A flare-up of violence in the Palestinian West Bank and a deadlock over Jewish settlements there loom as potential deal-breakers for Obama, who will host Israeli and Palestinian leaders for dinner at the White House in Washington.

Biden arrived in the capital at around 6:00 pm (1500 GMT), one day before a speech by President Barack Obama will signal the end of the American military’s combat operations in Iraq.

The three-day visit also comes as Iraq wrestles with political animosities that have seen no new government formed since an inconclusive general election almost six months ago, causing alarm in Washington.
