Egypt’s Constitutional Court backed the right of women judges to sit on the bench in the state’s administrative courts, despite opposition from conservatives, state media reported Monday.
The ruling follows a dispute within the State Council, the top administrative court, over whether women should be appointed.
Egypt cancelled the formal opening on Sunday of a renovated 19th-century synagogue in Cairo in protest at what antiquities chief Zahi Hawass called “provocative” Jewish and Israeli actions.
Both Hawass and Culture Minister Faruq Hosni had been due to attend the event a week to the day after 150 people, including rabbis and the US and Israeli ambassadors, attended the rededication of the Maimonides synagogue.
Citing press reports, Hawass said in a statement that the cancellation comes after “provocative” acts during the March 7 ceremony in Cairo’s ancient Jewish quarter.

A human rights organisation in Egypt has accused the interior ministry of manipulating the legal system to target a blogger who exposed police brutality.
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information said Wael Abbas had been jailed for six months in a case that had already been closed.

Egyptian police on Friday arrested nearly 50 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood who were staging anti-Israel demonstrations, a security official said.
They were rounded up after weekly prayers as they demonstrated against Israeli plans to build Jewish settlements in Arab east Jerusalem and place two West Bank shrines on a list of Israeli heritage sites.
Egypt’s top cleric, Sheik Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, known for promoting the government agenda against female genital mutilation and the face veil, died of a heart attack Wednesday during a visit to Saudi Arabia. He was 81.
Tantawi was the grand sheik of Cairo’s Al-Azhar, the pre-eminent theological institute of Sunni Islam, the faith’s mainstream sect.
Tantawi left a mixed legacy across the Muslim world, where he was touted as a moderate scholar and supporter of women’s rights but also criticized as an appointed civil servant who merely followed the line of Egypt’s government.
صرح الدكتور حاتم الجبلي وزير الصحة بأن الرئيس حسنى مبارك غادر وحدة الرعاية المركزة صباح الأربعاء إلى غرفة عادية بمستشفى هايدلبرج الجامعى.
وأكد الجبلي ، بحسب ما ذكر راديو مصر مساء الأربعاء، أن الحالة الصحية العامة للرئيس فى تحسن مستمر تحت إشراف الفريق الطبى المعالج.
وكان الرئيس مبارك قد أجرى صباح السبت الماضي عملية جراحية لاستئصال الحوصلة المرارية بمستشفى هايدلبرج الجامعي بألمانيا.
