Iran says it may halt oil sales to ‘some countries’

The dispute between Iran and the Western economies has escalated after Tehran warned it will stop oil sales to “some countries.”

Rostam Qasemi, Iran’s oil minister, said the curbs will be implemented soon but did not mention specific countries.

The warning comes just days after the European Union (EU) agreed to stop importing Iranian oil from 1 July.

The US and EU have been trying to target Iran’s oil exports as part of sanctions against it.

Yemen’s President Saleh arrives in US for treatment

Yemen’s President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has arrived in the United States to receive medical treatment for injuries sustained in an assassination attempt.

His departure from Yemen last week followed the passage of a law giving him immunity from prosecution, and a televised “farewell speech”.

Hundreds of people have been killed during nearly a year of unrest against Mr Saleh’s 33-year rule.

Iran says it has laser-guided artillery rounds

Iran has developed laser-guided artillery rounds designed to home in on stationary or moving targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometres (12 miles), Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi told state media Monday.

أعلنت شركة طوكيو اليكتريك باور اليابانية المشغلة لمحطة فوكوشيما النووية تسرب اكثر من 600 لتر من المياه مما أدى إلى تعليق عمليات التبريد في بركة للوقود بشكل مؤقت في مطلع الأسبوع الجاري.

Egypt anniversary demonstrators remain in Tahrir Square

Thousands of Egyptians have remained in Cairo’s Tahrir Square after a rally marking the anniversary of the uprising which toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

Some have vowed to stay until another rally planned for Friday, news agencies reported.

Many of the protesters are demanding a speedy handover of power from the interim military authorities.

Others are urging patience and celebrating the success of Islamist parties in post-Mubarak elections.

Mubarak trial lawyer: Israel, US shot protesters

A lawyer for Hosni Mubarak’s former interior minister says the United States and Israel plotted the killings of Egyptian protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled the longtime leader.

Lawyer Essam al-Battawi on Thursday also accused security guards at the American University in Cairo of opening fire on protesters. The university’s historic main building borders Tahrir Square, which served as the epicenter of the anti-Mubarak revolt.

Al-Battawi is a lawyer for former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly.

Arab League to call for UN backing on Syria plan

The Arab League is to ask the United Nations Security Council to back its plan to end the violence in Syria.

On Sunday, the League called for the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, to step down and hand power to his deputy.

The organisation’s chief Nabil al-Arabi and the Qatari prime minister are to travel to New York on Saturday to seek support for its proposals.

Meanwhile, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said it could not keep track of the death toll in Syria’s unrest.
