Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has set out a number of Mid-East peace proposals at the UN but PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the speech had not been cleared.

Mr Lieberman said a permanent Mid-East settlement could take decades and pressed a plan for transferring Israeli Arabs to any Palestinian state.

He said Iran controlled militant groups such as Hamas and could foil any deal.

The British army suffered defeat in Iraq when it pulled out of Basra, a senior American general has argued.

UK forces left the city in 2007, leaving the people to be “terrorised”, key White House adviser Gen Jack Keane told the BBC.

Some senior Taliban leaders appear to be open to reconciliation with Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government, but contacts are in the embryonic stage and not likely to bear fruit soon, NATO’s top civilian in Afghanistan said on Tuesday.

Mark Sedwill, who was visiting Washington to prepare for a NATO summit in Lisbon in November, said Karzai’s government had been undertaking a “genuine effort” to reach out to insurgents who were willing to renounce violence, accept the constitution and re-enter Afghan society.

Intelligence agencies have disrupted plans for multiple attacks on European cities by a group thought to be linked to al Qaeda, Britain’s Sky News said on Tuesday.

Militants based in Pakistan were planning simultaneous strikes in London, as well as cities in France and Germany, the channel’s foreign affairs editor, Tim Marshall, said.

Asked about the Sky News report, U.S. security officials said they could not confirm that a plot had been disrupted. But they said they believed that the threat of a plot or plots was continuing.

Egyptian property mogul Hisham Talaat Moustafa was jailed Tuesday for 15 years for the murder of a Lebanese pop star and ex-lover, 16 months after he was sentenced to death for the slaying.

“Hisham Talaat Moustafa was sentenced to 15 years in jail and (his associate Mohsen) al-Sukkari to 25 years for the murder of Suzanne Tamim,” state television said in a report.

مهما بالغنا في تكريم السيدة مريم العذراء بأن أطلقنا اسمها علي شارع أو علي حي أو أقمنا لها تمثالا‏,‏ فلن نبلغ تكريم القرآن الكريم وقوله إن الله اصطفاها وفضلها علي نساء العالمين‏.‏ وفي أكثر من آية كريمة‏.‏

ويقترح السيد سمير متري جيد‏:‏ اطلاق اسم السيدة مريم العذراء علي حي الزيتون أو علي شارع طومان باي بنفس الحي الذي فيه كنيسة السيدة العذراء مريم إنما ينبع أساسا من منطلق القرآن الكريم والانجيل علي تكريمها وتفضيلها علي نساء العالمين‏..‏ وهذا بحد ذاته يبرز أهم العوامل المشتركة بين قطبي الأمة والذي من الممكن أن يسهم في عودة روح المودة والحب والتسامح التي افتقدناها‏..‏ والإسراع باتخاذ هذه الخطوة سيكلل جهودنا مسلمين ومسيحيين مخلصين لهذا الوطن في محاربة التطرف وقتل الفتنة التي يسعي إليها بعض المنتفعين من الطرفين‏..‏
وجاء من المهندس بطرس صليب من كندا أن هناك معالم قبطية تلقي عظيم الاحترام من المسلمين والأقباط‏.‏ فلماذا لا نغير اسماءها الساذجة ونطلق عليها اسماء تاريخية‏..‏ من تاريخ الأقباط قديما وحديثا‏.‏ ويقول‏:‏ لعل الله يهدينا إلي سواء السبيل‏.‏ فقد كنا نعيش في حب وسلام ولا أقول ما يقوله الوف الأقباط إن لهم من المسلمين إخوة وأصدقاء العمر‏,‏ وإنهم يتزاورون عشرات السنين‏.‏ لاحظ سيادتك أنني أقول هذا الكلام كأنه حادث غريب مع أن هذا هو الأصل في أبناء الوطن الواحد‏.‏ ولا شأن للدين واللون والحب‏.‏ إننا هنا سمن علي عسل‏.‏ ونندهش ما الذي يجعلنا إذا عدنا إلي مصر نخفي السكاكين في ملابسنا‏.‏ والله حزين علينا وعلي بلدنا‏..‏ ونحن أيضا‏..‏
