Around 100 Palestinians clashed with Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Hebron on Thursday over an Israeli plan to renovate two deeply contested holy sites in the occupied territory.

The plan has infuriated Palestinians and been criticised by the United States as a “provocative” act that could further complicate efforts to relaunch Middle East peace talks suspended during the Gaza war more than a year ago.

Young men hurled rocks at soldiers who fired tear gas and stun grenades in running clashes near the disputed Tomb of the Patriarchs, according to an AFP correspondent who saw four Palestinians detained by soldiers.

A top UN official has condemned as “inadmissible” Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s call for a jihad, or holy war, against Switzerland.

“Such declarations on the part of the head of state are inadmissible in international relations,” said Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the UN chief in Geneva.

Col Gaddafi criticised a Swiss vote against the building of minarets and urged Muslims to boycott the country.

Israel plans more homes for East Jerusalem: report

Posted in Category: Middle East News — dina @ 5:23 pm
Share

Israel has plans to build another 600 homes in occupied land that it considers part of East Jerusalem, the Haaretz daily newspaper reported on Friday.

The plan, approved by a district planning commission, could further hamper U.S.-brokered efforts to revive stalled peace talks as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has insisted on a total settlement freeze in all territories, including Jerusalem.

Israeli officials reached by telephone had no immediate comment.

Palestinian official Ghassan al-Khatib denounced the decision as “another Israeli violation of international law”.

EU: Goods made at Jewish settlements are not Israeli

The European Court of Justice has ruled that Israeli goods made in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank cannot be considered Israeli.

This means goods made by Israelis or Jews in the West Bank cannot benefit from a trade deal giving Israel preferential access to EU markets.

EU import duties on Israeli goods from the settlements may now be imposed, making them less competitive.

Taliban suicide bombers targeted guesthouses in downtown Kabul on Friday, killing 16 people including Westerners and Indians in one of the deadliest attacks on foreigners in the Afghan capital.

The Islamist militia, which is waging a bitter insurgency against the US-backed Afghan government and more than 121,000 foreign troops based in the country, claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to AFP.

A car bomb exploded and two smaller blasts resounded over downtown Kabul, heralding what police called a “well-planned and coordinated attack” soon after dawn as Afghanistan commemorated the birth of the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

As they did in a November assembly vote on a similar resolution, Israel and its staunch US ally cast “no” votes.
