Iranian TV aired footage of one of the British navy crew arrested in the Gulf last week, in which he apologized to the Iranian people for entering their waters illegally.

“We trespassed without permission,” said the crewman, one of 15 arrested by Iranian forces seven days ago.

“Since we’ve been arrested our treatment has been very friendly. We have not been harmed at all. They’ve looked after us really well…The food they’ve been serving us is good and I am grateful that no harm has come to us,” said the man, whose name was read out by Iran’s Arabic language Al-Alam television as Nathan Thomas Summers.

The Israeli military will soon launch a huge offensive in the Gaza Strip to crush Palestinian resistance groups, mainly Hamas, chief of staff Major General Gabi Ashkenazi said.

“The strengthening process of the terror organizations in the Gaza Strip will have to be confronted,” Ashkenazi told the parliament’s foreign affairs and defense committee.

Reacting to Ashkenazi’s threats, Palestinian resistance groups said they are ready to defend Gaza, which Israel evacuated in 2005, in the face of Israeli occupation forces.

Rebels shot down a helicopter gunship in Mogadishu on Friday and Ethiopia said its forces had killed 200 insurgents in a two-day joint offensive with Somali troops against Islamists and clan militia.

Aid workers said scores of civilians also died in the city’s worst fighting in years. Shells crashed down and deafening tank fire shattered buildings as guerrillas replied with barrages of mortars, missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

A Sudanese man armed with a knife tried to hijack a plane flying from Tripoli to Khartoum with 284 people on board on Friday but was arrested after landing in the Sudanese capital.

The hijacker, Sayed Fallun Sayed, 39, had just been deported from Libya and tried to divert the plane to South Africa, the police said.

“The crew behaved in a professional and calm way and took the necessary security measures, which allowed the plane to land in Khartoum as scheduled.

“Security forces then managed to overpower the hijacker,” the police statement said, adding that an initial investigation suggested the man “was suffering psychological problems.”

A Saudi prisoner at the US “war on terror” camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said he had confessed under torture, according to a report released Friday by the Defense Department.

Abdel Rahim al-Nashiri, the suspected mastermind behind the 2002 attack of the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in Yemen, made the charge before a US military tribunal to determine his status as an “enemy combatant” on March 14.

Six Muslim men removed from a plane last fall after being accused of suspicious behavior are suing not only the airline but the passengers who complained — a move some fear could discourage travelers from speaking up when they see something unusual.

The civil rights lawsuit, filed earlier this month, has so alarmed some lawyers that they are offering to defend the unnamed “John Doe” passengers free of charge. They say it is vital that the flying public be able to report suspicious behavior without fear of being dragged into court.

- A French architect said on Friday he had cracked a 4,500-year-old mystery surrounding Egypt’s Great Pyramid, saying it was built from the inside out.

Previous theories have suggested Pharaoh Khufu’s tomb, the last surviving example of the seven great wonders of antiquity, was built using either a vast frontal ramp or a ramp in a corkscrew shape around the exterior to haul up the stonework.
