The trial of an Egyptian with Canadian citizenship accused of spying for Israel resumed in Cairo on Wednesday.
Defendant Mohammed al-Attar was arrested in Cairo on January 1 on charges of bribery, espionage and conspiring to “harm Egypt’s national interests”.
Three Israelis are being tried in the same case in absentia.
The trial began on Saturday but was adjourned after Attar’s court-appointed lawyer quit.

وقال العطار في حوار نشرته جريدة “المصري اليوم” فى عددها الاربعاء : إنه يعرف ضباط الموساد الثلاثة المتهمين معه في القضية، لكنه لم يتجسس لصالح إسرائيل واعترف بأنه شاذ جنسيا.
The United States is willing to attend a regional conference in Iraq next month that will include representatives from Iran and Syria, the White House said.
The Iraqi government said the Baghdad conference is aimed at seeking ways to stabilize the war-torn country and would be an “ice-breaker” for Western and regional powers.
White House spokeswoman, Dana Perino, said if a regional conference was hosted by Iraq, and “if we were invited to participate, we certainly would.”
“Everyone in the region and interested parties has an interest and a stake in making sure that Iraq is a thriving democracy. And so if we were invited we would attend,” she said.
Lebanese security officials have uncovered a European-run intelligence network that spies on the resistance movement Hezbollah, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.
According to As Safir, Lebanon’s General Security Department arrested an inspector at the Rafiq Hariri International Airport in Beirut after “noticing suspicious action.”
The daily said the inspector, from the northern port city of Tripoli, was one of the top members of the spy network. It didn’t say when he was detained, but noted that he has been referred to the military judiciary.

A four-year-old girl became Egypt’s latest victim of bird flu, the 23rd to be diagnosed since the virus was detected in the country, the official MENA news agency said on Wednesday.
Sara Essayyed Borhan, from the Nile Delta region of Dahaqliya, tested positive for the virus and was transferred to Cairo’s Manshiet al-Bakri hospital late on Tuesday, the agency said, quoting its director Yussri Ragab.
The child was being treated with Tamiflu and was in a stable condition, while her family had all tested negative for the virus.
قضت محكمة مصرية يوم الاربعاء بحبس شرطي لمدة سنة لادانته بتهمة استعمال القسوة مع مواطن في مركز للشرطة في القاهرة.
وقال مصدر قضائي “حكمت محكمة جنح امبابة بحبس أمين الشرطة أحمد عبد الفتاح تمام لمدة سنة مع الشغل والنفاذ بتهمة استعمال القسوة مع أحد المواطنين.”
وأضاف أن المحكمة “قضت ببراءة الضابط كريم عبد الله عبد المحسن من التهمة.”
The United States will reject any request by Italy to extradite CIA agents indicted in the abduction of a Muslim cleric in Milan, a U.S. legal advisor said on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, a Milan judge ordered 26 Americans, most of them CIA agents, to stand trial with Italian spies for kidnapping an Egyptian imam Osama Mustafa Hassan in Milan in 2003 and sending him to Egypt, where he says was tortured.
“We’ve not got an extradition request from Italy … If we got an extradition request from Italy, we would not extradite U.S. officials to Italy,” State Department Legal Adviser John Bellinger told a news briefing.
ناشدت منظمة العفو الدولية (أمنستي انترناشيونال) الاتحاد الأوروبي تشديد الإجراءات الخاصة بتداول الأدوات والأجهزة التي تستخدم في التعذيب البدني للسجناء.
وقالت المنظمة إن أكثر من نصف الدول أعضاء الاتحاد لم يبدأوا في تطبيق الاجراءات التي تم ادخالها العام الماضي، وإن تلك الإجراءات ليست كافية.
وتطالب المنظمة الدولية الاتحاد الأوروبي بتمديد قائمة الأدوات المحظورة لكي تشمل العصي المشقوقة وكل أنواع الحبال.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad extended full support to his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Beshir on his first visit to the country on Wednesday, blaming the United States and its allies for the region’s woes.
On a two-day visit aimed at bolstering ties between the oil-producing Islamic states — both considered state sponsors of terrorism by Washington — the Iranian leader held talks with Beshir and several other senior officials.
