The federal government has agreed to pay $300,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by an Egyptian who was among dozens of Muslim men swept up in the New York area after 9/11, held for months in a federal detention center in Brooklyn and deported after being cleared of links to terrorism.

The settlement, filed in federal court late yesterday, is the first the government has made in a number of lawsuits charging that noncitizens were abused and their constitutional rights violated in detentions after the terror attacks.

Spooked by Bird Flu, Egyptians Hoard Water

Posted in Category: Egypt News — Shirin Hassan @ 8:07 am

CAIRO, Feb. 25 — Of all the panicky ways that people worldwide have sought protection from bird flu, perhaps the most striking took root among Egyptians last week. Via e-mail and through advice dispensed on crowded city streets, word went out: Don’t drink the water.

Farmers, including the rooftop poultry breeders that are a Cairo fixture, had begun to dump stricken, dead chickens into the Nile River, the source of drinking water for millions of Egyptians, newspapers and satellite television reported. Taps were suddenly turned off and people rushed to stores to buy bottled water.

Posted in Category: Egypt News — dina @ 12:28 am

The United States will not seek to close a free agreement with Egypt this year because the “timing” is not right, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said before a trip to Middle East that includes a first stop in Egypt.

It was widely believed Washington, which had planned to reach the agreement with the government of President Hosni Mubarak by year’s end, had switched course after what it saw as backsliding on Egyptian promises to reform its political system.

Posted in Category: Middle East News — dina @ 1:32 pm
